What is Knockout Questions?
Knockout questions are mandatory application questions that automatically disqualify candidates when their answers do not meet predefined criteria.
You will often see knockout questions at the start of an online form: 'Do you have the right to work in the UK?', 'Can you commute to Manchester three days per week?', 'Do you hold a full driving licence?' A single 'no' may end the application immediately, regardless of CV strength.
These filters save recruiters time on hard requirements the employer will not flex. They also cause frustration when questions are vague or when candidates might qualify with reasonable adjustment. Read each question carefully before investing time in a long CV upload.
Knockout logic is separate from CV parsing and keyword scoring. You can submit a brilliant CV and still be rejected in seconds. Where optional fields exist, answer accurately — misrepresentation can surface at interview or referencing.
If you are filtered out on a knockout question, it is usually better to move on than to game the form. For roles where you do meet requirements, ensure your CV still aligns with the job description so you are competitive among remaining applicants.
