Before you send another application, run through this ats friendly cv checklist. Each item reflects a real parsing failure we see in CVs analysed on Cvaluate — not theoretical advice from a template vendor. Pass every line and you have cleared the first hurdle: getting your experience into the system intact.

The checklist

CheckPass?
1.Single-column layout (no side-by-side columns or text boxes)
2.Standard section headings: Work Experience, Education, Skills
3.Contact details in the document body, not header/footer
4.Common fonts (Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Georgia) — no custom icon fonts for text
5.No tables used purely for layout
6.No essential text inside images, charts, or logos
7.Text-based PDF or DOCX — not a scanned photograph of a CV
8.Consistent date format (e.g. Jan 2022 – Mar 2024)
9.Acronyms spelled out on first use
10.Skills section lists tools and technologies by name
11.Bullet points use standard characters (• or -), not special symbols
12.URLs are plain text or standard hyperlinks
13.Length appropriate to experience (1–2 pages for most roles)
14.Keywords from the target job description appear in context
15.Professional summary at the top (2–3 lines)

Formatting deep dives

If you failed any layout or structure checks, read 12 formatting mistakes that break ATS parsing for before/after examples. For the full strategic picture, see the complete guide to beating applicant tracking systems.

Content checks

Parsing is necessary but not sufficient. Your CV also needs keyword alignment with the role. After formatting checks:

  • Highlight must-have skills in the job description
  • Confirm each appears in your skills list or experience bullets
  • Adjust your professional summary to mirror the role title and domain

Method: match job description keywords the right way. Quick tool: CV keyword checker.

Quick content fix

Before: Experienced with various CRM and marketing tools.
After: Daily user of HubSpot and Salesforce; built 12 email nurture flows with 34% avg. open rate.

Named tools parse. Vague claims do not.

File format

ATS-friendly format is about extractable text. Read PDF or Word for ATS? if you are unsure which to submit.

Frequently asked questions

What does ATS-friendly mean?
A CV format that applicant tracking software can parse into correct fields without losing information. It is not a special template — it is a set of layout and content choices.
Are two-column CV templates ATS-friendly?
Usually no. Multi-column layouts often scramble reading order so experience and skills land in the wrong fields.
Should I submit Word or PDF?
Either works if the file is text-based. When the employer specifies a format, follow their instruction. More detail in our PDF vs Word article.
Do I need to remove all design elements?
Remove design that carries information parsers cannot extract. Simple bold headings and bullet lists are fine.
