Content checks
Parsing is necessary but not sufficient. Your CV also needs keyword alignment with the role. After formatting checks:
- Highlight must-have skills in the job description
- Confirm each appears in your skills list or experience bullets
- Adjust your professional summary to mirror the role title and domain
Method: match job description keywords the right way. Quick tool: CV keyword checker.
Quick content fix
Before: Experienced with various CRM and marketing tools.
After: Daily user of HubSpot and Salesforce; built 12 email nurture flows with 34% avg. open rate.
Named tools parse. Vague claims do not.
File format
ATS-friendly format is about extractable text. Read PDF or Word for ATS? if you are unsure which to submit.

Frequently asked questions
- What does ATS-friendly mean?
- A CV format that applicant tracking software can parse into correct fields without losing information. It is not a special template — it is a set of layout and content choices.
- Are two-column CV templates ATS-friendly?
- Usually no. Multi-column layouts often scramble reading order so experience and skills land in the wrong fields.
- Should I submit Word or PDF?
- Either works if the file is text-based. When the employer specifies a format, follow their instruction. More detail in our PDF vs Word article.
- Do I need to remove all design elements?
- Remove design that carries information parsers cannot extract. Simple bold headings and bullet lists are fine.
